He was also a master of the operatic form in comic works such as "The Marriage of Figaro" as well as dramatic works like "Don Giovanni." He moved opera away from the more somber themes of the earlier era, and made the operatic stage more realistic and passionate in its musical depiction of human emotions. He showed that comic opera could be great art and great music. He was also a master performer and created many small-scale works for chamber orchestras as well as symphonies. He also wrote many great religious works, such as his famous masses.
