Mastering a Skill

Most people know how to use a computer and many use their computers every day to check e-mail, surf the Internet, or listen to music. However, relatively few people know how to program computers. Computer programming is a complex science but it is also a skill that many people could master if they just took some time to learn the basics. Learning how to program computers would help people avoid problems on their machines and troubleshoot any problems that do arise. Troubleshooting is otherwise a time-consuming task for people who don't know anything about programming. Another reason why computer programming comes in handy is by expanding job prospects. Employers are more willing to hire someone with a basic understanding of programming than someone without any programming training whatsoever. A person with programming skills may be able to find work anywhere in the world and can change careers easily or even freelance. Finally, computer programming is a highly creative skill that enhances a person's ability to think critically and solve problems. All people should master the basics of computer programming because they can solve their own computer problems, expand their job prospects, and enhance their cognitive functioning.

Learning computer programming does not necessarily mean having to return to graduate school to get a Master's degree. Anyone can learn basic programming skills that can help prevent and alleviate everyday computer problems. From networking troubles to major hardware or software conflicts, computers can be problematic pieces of technology. No computer user has been exempt from the headaches associated with computer problems. Learning computer programming will help ordinary computer users troubleshoot everyday problems. Instead of calling a tech support expert, consumers can save money by learning how to address problems on their own. Although not all problems require programming skills, those skills do enhance the individual's command of computer hardware and software. Programming skills impart confidence and allow consumers to feel more comfortable with their purchases. In essence, programming skills demystify computers; therefore, computer programming should itself be demystified.

In addition to their helpfulness in combating everyday problems, computer programming skills can remedy a troubled career. Mastering any new skill helps a person be more competitive in today's job market. However, mastering computer skills can be especially helpful. Not only is the new economy information-based, but those who master unique skills have a competitive edge. In any field, computer programming skills are viewed as an asset. Just as programming skills help consumers troubleshoot their own problems and save money, programming skills can help corporations troubleshoot their problems in house, avoiding unnecessary expenditures on outsourced programmers or technicians. Computer programming skills can also be channeled into creative enterprise. For example, a person who masters programming skills can start a new business offering technical support to clients, or a business designing proprietary and custom-designed software for any number of industries. These entrepreneurial ideas may become full-time self-employment or may simply be adjuncts to one's standard job.

There are also good personal reasons to master the special skill of computer programming. Computer programming is inherently creative. It encourages people to come up with novel solutions for problems. Programmers design interesting software, and even simple little applications can become challenging creative projects. For example, creating a plug-in for a Web browser or a skin for a music player would be impossible without learning at least some programming skills. Programmers can help their friends develop scripts that automate common tasks. Computer programming is about problem solving, and therefore computer programmers become better equipped to think creatively and critically about problems in any area of their lives.
