The beginning of the story has Stevens awaiting a reunion with Ms. Kenton, illustrating that there is a point at which one has accomplished something professional and can then turn attention to personal loyalty. He is able now to revisit that part of this life and truly consider her role with his father and the value of that, being that she was playing his role. In this way, the loyalty to family is finally realized, long after professional loyalty has been clearly established.
