Using a variety of teaching methods can help integrating the learning of language from one subject to another. One study of bilingual students in Papua New Guinea found that that up to 39% of mathematical errors were language related and another study of bilingual Filipino-English students found that they were better at solving word problems presented in their native language, despite having fluency in both languages in other subjects (Bernardo et al. 2005, p.1.). Helping students be creative with language in a social format can often help children gain greater confidence and flexibility in using the new language.
Oral and written language abilities and first language knowledge is a strong predictor of a children's success with bilingual literacy, indicating there may be a generalized language learning ability 'trait' (Rinaldi & Perez 2010). However, by making use of other types of learning methods, and playing to a variety of different strengths, bilingual education can be more accessible for all students, and become more effective for students who are naturally inclined to do well in the subject.
