¶ … lose the will to win. Keep the focus on the goal, not on your nerves. The buzzer. I can practically hear the sound. I can taste the sound in the split second before time is called. I throw the shot. We win. I win. My team wins. I have thrown the shot, but achieved a common goal.

All sports, especially collegiate team sports are competitive and cutthroat. But no sport demands the mental discipline and the split-second cool of basketball. No sport forces a player to think on her feet like basketball. Basketball games move fast, and points are made swiftly on both sides. Seconds, shots, can determine the course of an entire team's destiny. No movement can be wasted. One must act as a team and still think as an individual.

I admit that I am biased in my love for this game. After all, I was the team captain...

I proudly led my team to the conference championships and to an automatic bid in the tournament. My team demanded my unflagging loyalty to my younger teammates, called upon me to be both a teacher and a mentor, and also fostered the desire within me to inspire my team by my example. I always strove to show my unflagging persistence, good humor, and determination on the court and at practices.
These same skills of leadership, competition, focus on a goal, and even the willingness to show myself to the utmost in a performance and to act as a teacher of clarity and passion, will all stand me well, in law school and later in the courts of out nation's justice system.
