1936
First observation of corneal flattening as a result of traumatic injury by Tsutomu Sato. Conceives of principle of principles of transverse and radial keratotomy but first attempts produce cloudy tissue due to approach from under the cornea.
1948
First attempt at mechanically repairing corneal tissue by surgical removal, reshaping, and replacement of flap by Jose Barraquer.
1960's
Radial Keratotomy developed and introduced by Svyatoslav
Fyodorov. Approaches incisions from outside the eye and solves cloudy tissue development problem encountered by Sato.
1975-79
Development of excimer laser technology.
1983

for the correction of myopia with or without astigmatism
1999
First excimer lasers approved for LASIK surgery
2000
Excimer laser for LASIK to correct hyperopia approved by U.S.
FDA
2002
Wavefront guided LASIK approved for custom correction
2002
IntraLase receives FDA approval for laser assisted creation of corneal flap.

Social Implications and Risks
Mechanical Lenses -- No risk but limited value until reliable frames and glassmaking processes. Implications: Improved vision through cumbersome means.
Contact Lenses -- Greater risk of corneal damage and infection. Less cumbersome to wear but require more care in application, cleaning, and maintenance. Implications: Obviates the need for glasses.
LASIK Procedure -- Provides noninvasive surgical solution. Implications: Permanent solution to vision problems without invasive surgery and associated risks and potential complications.

Safety of Laser Eye Surgery Prior to the advent of laser technology, ophthalmologists relied purely on mechanical means of surgically correcting myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness), and astigmatism. Automated Lamellar Keratectomy is a procedure through which an automatic apparatus called a microkeratome slices an extremely thin layer of tissue from the surface of the cornea in order to alter the refractive index of the ocular lens. In the case of nearsightedness, the
What is it? LASIK is the acronym for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis" (Goldstein 2010). LASIK surgery is a type of surgery conducted on the human eye to correct deficiencies in vision. The human eye is not unlike a camera: "The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina" (LASIK, 2011, FDA). The cornea or lens is often imperfect in shape and
The primary types of computer-controlled laser eye surgeries are PRK and LASIK. Both reshape the corneal area of the eye to allow light to better focus on the retina, resulting in clearer vision for the patient. Yet, it is only through the use of computer technology that this can be achieved. The lasers used in these procedures remove infinitesimal amounts of tissue, approximately 1/500th the width of a human
Presbyopia is a disorder, where the lens of the eye loses its capacity to focus. This incapacity makes it hard to see items up close. Some scholars have suggested that presbyopia means "age of sight." Presbyopia is not similar to farsightedness because it involves the loss of accommodation and ability for the eye to correct to enhance clarity at various distances. In this context, the young eye requires to change
Above all it has followed the deliberate marketing of health care (in association with tourism) as medical care has gradually moved away from the public sector to the private sector, ensuring that a growing majority of people, especially in the richest countries, and particularly in the United States, must pay -- often considerably -- for health care. Finally, growing interest in cosmetic surgery, involving such elective procedures as rhinoplasty, liposuction,
