Job Satisfaction in Nursing Related to Generational Differences

Problem description

The contemporary times have seen many, particularly the current generation otherwise referred to as the Y generation turning their attention away from nursing in general and focusing their interest elsewhere and in other professions. This trend has led to an acute shortage in nurses hence reducing the ratio of nurses to patients to very low. This is the great challenge that the nursing in America is facing now and needs to be addressed in light of the generational gap that may be causing the shift away from the hitherto considered noble profession.

the design to be used in this research is the case study design or the qualitative approach since this will give an in-depth study of the research problem mentioned above as opposed to a sweeping statistical survey.

Rationale for research approach: This qualitative approach will help in narrowing down from a broad field to a researchable area of concern. It will also help us in testing the theories that will be looked at in trying to explain the attrition among nurses and qualifying the theory that best suits our research problem area. This design will help in understanding any complex issues through a detailed contextual analysis, it will allow for the application of variety of methodologies to the research as need may be. The qualitative approach will also help add to what is already known from previous researches as well as help examine and apply in the paper the real life situations.

Role and bias of the researcher: The greatest role is to act as a control and coordinator in the data collection process. I also need to evaluate the valuable data and analyze the recorded data in light of the research being conducted. There will also be need to apply the collected data in coming up with implications of the data to the research.

The biases that may come up is the temptation to manipulate the data by either misinterpretation of the inclusion of inferred information from the respondent. There is also the tendency to delete or intentionally leave out information given by respondent with own judgment to the value of the information, yet it could be valuable.

Sampling technique:

The sampling technique to be used in this research will be the stratified random sampling method. This will ensure that the data is collected from a target population, especially those who are within or at least have been within the nursing profession in different sectors, and random so that it gives equal possibility of these participants to participate in the research. This technique will help eliminate the possibility of getting unwanted data from people who have not had the experience of nursing in the previous years hence rendering their experience irrelevant.
