Intercultural and Multicultural Communication
Countries are no longer confined by borders. Today's society is a global society, and intercultural issues and intercultural communication have become a part of daily life, whether in business, education or personal. Type 'intercultural education' on Google's search engine, and over two million Web sites become available. Four such Web sites are The Young Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research, The American Council on International Intercultural Education, The International Association for Intercultural Education, and the University Center for Intercultural Education.
The University Center for Intercultural Education is designed to cultivate the social and humanity skills of students to enable them to cope effectively with the emerging era of globalization, and to become responsible international citizens.
Subjects include electronic communications and information processing, health sciences, and foreign languages, which gives the student the ability to communicate internationally.
Universities around the globe are seeing a major trend in increased awareness of language and culture, because the understanding the language of a people is the key to understanding the cultural and people as a whole.
Information processing helps students compete in today's complex society, and influence the world beyond the politically drawn boundaries.
The Young Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research is an international association that involves the efforts of students and young professionals from various practical and academic disciplines who share a concern for intercultural relations.
Young SIETAR uses a variety of activities to build a bridge between professionals and students by emphasizing intercultural education.
Young SIETAR takes advantage of the technological advances during the past few years, and views the World Wide Web as the ideal medium for presenting and expanding its initiative.
Virtual teams work on numerous projects with the help of interactive tools such as bulletin boards, e-groups, and electronic messaging, thus, allowing individuals from around the globe to connects and exchange thoughts and ideas.
The International Association for Intercultural Education unites professional educators who are interested in diversity and equity issues in education.
These issues include intercultural education, multi-cultural education, anti-racist education, human rights education, conflict resolution, multi-lingualism issues, to name a few.
The aim of this association is to unite both academics and classroom teachers from various disciplines through organized workshops, seminars and conferences, and the publication of the academic journal "Intercultural Education."
The American Council on International Intercultural Education is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges, and is an advocate for community colleges within the global arena.
ACIIE facilitates programs, activities, and provides linkages to international and intercultural education.
It acts as an information clearinghouse for current international and intercultural programs, consultant opportunities in the United States and abroad, and as a liaison with other higher education associations that are involved in international education, providing study and work opportunities for students and community members.
