Responsive Parenting Tips

The NAYEC expresses its mission in three goals:

Improving professional practice and working conditions in early childhood education.

-Supporting early childhood programs by working to achieve a high-quality system of early childhood education.

-Building a high-performing, inclusive organization of groups and individuals who are committed to promoting excellence in early childhood education for all young children.

Early childhood care professionals can align themselves with these goals by encouraging responsive parenting as a means to for development.

The ethical application of these methods requires allowing more freedom and leniency than in other types of parenting styles. "Spoiling" a child is often cited as an ethical risk in responsive parenting. Child care professionals need to ensure that being too nice to a child may also hinder their development and cause further behavioral problems.

1. Do not spoil your children, draw lines and enforce them.

2. Loving your child is the most important thing you can do.

3. Embrace the chaos and enjoy the temporary disorder that comes with child rearing.

4. Speak to your child as you would like to be spoken to.

5.

Allow your children to experiment with new things and ideas. Learning requires breaking free of old ideas and habits.

6. Stay calm and collected when your child is misbehaving. Demonstrate the proper way to behave.

7. How you respond dictates the future, patience is a virtue.

Children do not arrive with instruction manuals leaving parents with many questions on how to best raise and mold their offspring. Responsive parenting is one approach that has demonstrated to be helpful when dealing with the many of the behavioral problems that arise during infancy up to the age of 8.
