Loud Music One of the most common causes of hearing loss is noise while hearing loss is regarded as one of the most common occupational illnesses in America. Noise plays a crucial factor in hearing loss because of its prevalence and people's vulnerability to exposure to noisy environments. Exposures to a single shot from a large caliber firearm can instantly result in permanent hearing loss whereas repeated exposures to loud machinery or music over a long period of time poses serious risks to human hearing (Fligor par, 1). Noise is a major cause of hearing loss because people tend to overlook or underestimate its impact as it continues to damage human hearing gradually.

In the past few years, one of the greatest contributors to hearing loss is loud music. Actually, many people are agreeing that listening to loud music for over an extended period of times can cause hearing loss. Moreover, the more the exposure to loud music and noise, the shorter the period of time in which a hearing loss can take place. This kind of hearing loss is commonly known as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and commonly occurs through exposure to excess loud sounds. In such cases, this type of hearing loss cannot be treated or corrected through any surgical or medical procedure. This kind of hearing loss can be brought by a single exposure to a very loud sound that is at least 120 decibels or listening to loud music of at least 85 decibels over a long period of time. Hearing loss occurs when damage takes place to the microscopic hair cells that are located inside the cochlea. The hair cells usually react to the mechanical sound vibrations by transmitting an electrical signal to the auditory nerve (Dangerous Decibels par, 1).
Generally, sound pressure or sound intensity is measured in decibels (dB) through a sound level meter. Similar to a temperature scale, the decibel scale in the sound level meter goes below zero since the average individual can hear sounds even to around 0dB, which is the level of rustling leaves.
