An Analysis of Personal Learning

Throughout much initial schooling in the educational system's current set-up, different areas of knowledge and differing tasks are generally approached in wholly separate manners. The study of history is not combined with the study of mathematics, and lessons meant to expand knowledge in biology don't often include lessons in aesthetics and art. This is actually detrimental to the educational process, however, as the fact is most bodies of knowledge touch upon the skills and knowledge acquired in other learning areas. The fact that skills in English and composition would be so essential in acquiring and demonstrating learning in the social sciences and even in certain areas of the "hard sciences" is something that I did not fully appreciate when beginning this course, and now that this has been made clear I realize that I have made significant progress, yet real challenges still remain.

Learning Evidenced in Writing

My scholarship and analytical abilities are well-represented in this particular piece of writing, as it demonstrates my ability to both absorb and apply knowledge. Understanding complex issues such as how weather affects lifestyle and business potentials in the Great Plains requires a fair amount of analytic abilities as well as the proper level of scholarship to adequately identify these weather features in the first place. This is just one example in the current document of my skills in this area, which have definitely been improved by the type of investigations and learning conducted in this course.

This document also clearly portrays the advances I have made in my understanding of this particular area of social science and in the Social Sciences in general. Understanding the development of weather patterns, their interactions with various geographies and topographies, and the impact of these elements on human populations and endeavors is something very new to me, and in fact is a type of knowledge I had not been truly aware of prior to this course. My academic skills have also grown somewhat during this course, though one of the most prominent ways in which this growth has occurred is in awakening me to the detriments I have that still need to be addressed. Especially during time-sensitive and otherwise constrained writing assignments, I have definite problems making sure my writing stays consistent and correct in its grammar and structure; coming to a deeper understanding and appreciation about this will allow me to grow academically in a much more successful manner.

The California Social Science framework includes a requirement of improvements in geographic knowledge and understanding at all grade levels, and this has been definitely demonstrated in this particular document. My knowledge of the geography of the Great Plains and the surrounding area is definitely much greater than it was prior to the learning I obtained in this course, and my current level of knowledge in this area is clearly demonstrated in this paper. In addition, I have made improvement in general academic areas such as increases in my scholarship and analytical capabilities, which of course is also part of the California curriculum and learning frameworks not simply in the social sciences but in all areas.
