According to a United Nations Security Council report 25 time as many Afghan citizens die every year as a result of hunger and poverty than from violence. One of the world's poorest nations, 7.4 million, or about one third of the population is "food insecure." Another third of the population is on the borderline to that status (Loewenberg, 2009).
