¶ … Hunger has invaded our universe with the tyranny of a thousand Napoleon armies. This agent of destruction exists all around the world and affects millions of people. It is my determination that world hunger is eradicated in every corner of the world. The removal of this dreadful quandary is of the utmost importance if we are to ensure a hunger free environment for generations to come.
World hunger is one of the most critical problems facing our world today. It is estimated that 24,000 human beings die each day of starvation and hunger related diseases; 74% of these people are children. These statistics are staggering because it means that one person dies of starvation every 3.6 seconds. (Daily Results)
Within the developing world, 17% of the population was malnourished during 1997-1999, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This means that 777.2 million people did not have enough food to meet their daily energy needs. (Trends and Current Status of Malnutrition in the World) The FAO also found that in March of 2001 thirty-five countries faced food emergencies. Among these nations were 18 countries in Africa, 11 nations in Asia and Near East regions, four nations in Latin America and two in Eastern Europe.
