Human trafficking: causes, impacts, and prevention strategies

Human trafficking has become a common thing in the world today; I will start by defining what human trafficking is. Human trafficking is basically the trade of human beings.it involves trading of human beings for purposes such as sexual slavery, extracting of tissues and organs such as ova or for forced labor. Currently, human trafficking is quite an attractive and lucrative business estimated to close to 32 billion dollars in a year in terms of international trade. Despite the fact that human trafficking occurs at a local level it leads to international implications. There has always been confusion when it comes to human trafficking and smuggling.

Human trafficking is different from the smuggling of people. With the smuggling of people an individual known as a smuggler is requested or voluntarily hired for the purpose of covertly transporting people from on area to another. This involves the transportation of people from one country to another where there could be otherwise the denial of legal entry at a border. Also unlike human trafficking there is no deception involved when the illegal agreement is being made. Once the smuggled person enters into a country they are left free to find their own way within the country.

The international center of migration policy development terms human trafficking as a crime against the state, this is because human trafficking involves the violation of immigration laws but it does not term the rights of migrants who have been smuggled as a crime. Human trafficking on the other hand is considered a crime against an individual since the victim rights are violated through exploitation and coercion. While smuggling there has to be travelling involved in human trafficking this is not necessary. Victims of human trafficking are not allowed to leave once they get to their destination. They are usually held against their will through acts such as forced work or coercion or give services to other people or the traffickers themselves. The services or work include sex exploitation which is commercialized to forced labor. There are also some arrangements structured as a work contract that has very low pay and a person might even end up without being paid anything at all. There are also other instances where the agreement involves debt bondage whereby a victim has not been able to pay off their debt hence they work towards paying off that debt.

Trafficking in children is on a rise now. This involves the recruitment, transportation, harboring, transfer or receipt of children for the purpose of them being exploited. Trafficking of young girls for prostitution is often carried out by women who have been trafficked. Since they are adults they use the trust and personal relationships they have with people in their villages to recruit more girls who do not know what awaits them where they are taken. They are often lured or fed with lies about the exact thing they are going to do wherever they are being taken. They only realize they have been trafficked when they reach where they are taken and find out it is not what they were promised.in most cases the women who are approached are those who are vulnerable financially and are offered some for of "legitimate" work or are even promised education opportunities.in other instances the traffickers use marriage offers, intimidation, threats and kidnapping as forms of obtaining victims. The traffickers establish their control over the victims through emotional tactics, drugs and financial bait.in other instances they might even resort to violence like physical and mental abuse. Apart from the involuntary trafficking there are some women who might voluntarily migrate and get themselves trafficked for the purpose of sex work involuntarily due to poverty (Hauser, & Castillo,2013).
