Global warming is caused by the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, which trap heat inside the planet and keep it from escaping into outer space. Imagine the globe is like a parked car sitting in the sun with all the windows rolled up. The outside of the car may be hot, but the inside of the car will be so hot that belt buckles will burn one's skin if touched. Now if the car's windows were rolled down and the inside heat allowed to escape, the inside of the car would not be nearly as hot. This is essentially what is happening to the planet. Because the atmosphere is being polluted by greenhouse gasses, it is not allowing heat to escape and so the planet is warming as a result. What causes greenhouse gasses? The primary cause is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil and coal, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Every car and bus going down the road releases carbon dioxide, which pollutes the air and contributes to the greenhouse effect. As NASA predicts, the effects of this pollution will be that the "Earth will become warmer ... [and] warmer conditions will probably lead to more evaporation and precipitation overall" and glaciers will melt and the sea level rise (NASA). If the sea level rises, much of life on the planet could be threatened -- especially coastal regions that are most susceptible. This paper will discuss the causes and effects of global warming and what humans can do to reverse the trend. The issue of global warming is modern one: its roots are in the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. The Industrial Revolution was a tremendous time in human history when the development of technology proceeded at such a rapid pace that it transformed the nature of the way in which the world interacts:
experienced a series of extreme and devastating weather events including Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans, Louisiana and other parts of the south in 2005, flooding in Europe in 2005, heavy snowfall in Europe in 2010 and 2011, and flooding throughout Asia from 2005 to the present. Many of these weather patterns are related to El Nino or La Nina storms, which are two-to-eight-year weather patterns where changing wind
Global warming occurs due to the rise in temperature. The trapping of light and heat from the sun causes this rising of temperature. Nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor are the green house gases, these gases trap the light and heat from the sun, and as a result, the temperature rises. This global warming hurts a large number of people, plants and animals living in the earth. There
, 1998. They work to regulate the temperatures in the globe by reabsorbing heat reflected from the surface of the earth and trapping it. The natural process of trapping heat creates a balance on the global atmosphere only when the amount of heat trapped does not exceed the volumes required. Over the years, human activities have led to the introduction of artificially created gases comprising of Methane and carbon dioxide. The release
In contrast, if countries began immediately to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the cost could be limited to approximately one percent of global GDP each year. Global warming is a scientific issue, but it is being treating as an economic and political one. The Kyoto Protocol should never have allowed economic considerations to justify exemptions. This only gives incentives for companies to move to countries with exemptions to take advantage of
Global Warming The Growing Consensus on Global Warming In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many segments of the general public have begun to concede that global climate change and its various consequences are real. Moreover, as the New Jersey coast and the streets of New York experienced flooding and damage the likes of which had never been seen this far north, it has become difficult to deny that our weather patterns are
Cool nights and warm days are needed to make syrup and the earlier warmth reduces the length of spring and limits the snow pack that moderates the temperatures of the trees during the evening. Said one sugarmaker: "It used to be you never tapped before the first week of March. Now you have to be ready February 15" (Bazilchuk, 2000). But Quebec's displacement of Vermont may not last long,
