Health Behavior Currently At The Term Paper

Health Behavior

Currently at the preparation stage of change in the transtheoretical model, I have worked out a comprehensive course of action that will lead to a transformation in my behavior. Before reaching this stage, I did go through the previous two stages including precontemplation, during which I was still in denial about the deleterious effects of smoking. At that point smokers have no chance at all of quitting because they have no motivation whatsoever. For a number of personal reasons including health scares but also interventions by family and friends, I reached the contemplation stage. That was when I first started compiling the scientific research that proved clearly that my habit was causing me direct bodily harm. Realizing that it was a scientific fact that smoking causes a number of different illnesses -- and may even lead to illnesses in other people -- was what fueled my desire to prepare for this plan of action.

The progress I have made so far should not be discounted simply because I set a date in the near future to physically release the habit from my life. In fact, the preparation stage has been enormously helpful in providing me with the desire to change and also the self-confidence that I will succeed. I have, as the transtheoretical model suggests, gone through the decisional balance that encourages me to weigh pros and cons of quitting smoking. I noted that quitting might be time-consuming (con); might make me irritable and for a while, horrible to be around (con); and would most certainly be the most difficult thing I have ever done (con). The pros, however, seem so much more invigorating and include younger looking skin, better breath, better smelling clothes and home, and most importantly, improved health and well-being. Moreover, I included improved familial relationships as a significant pro-in my decision to quit. I anticipate my intervention will work because it is a well-thought out plan that involves systematic stages; assistance from qualified medical staff; and support from friends and family. Knowing that I can rely on myself as well as external supports will ensure that I reach the maintenance stage and remain smoke-free for life.
