Lastly the focus on Clan through the use of the cultural aspects discussed in the first question also supports its unique ability to continually create greater levels of innovation and growth over time. Adhocracy is critical given the intellectual abilities of the people the company attracts and retains, as they are more interested in attaining objectives even if it means cutting across functional lines of authorizing rather than being governed by a strict hierarchical framework. The clan aspect of the structure of the competing values framework is critical for the continual growth and maturation of the culture, so highly attuned to the development of innovation instead of embracing the status quo as is the case in so many other cultures. The foundation of Google's innovation is its ability to create norms, values and core beliefs as part of its Clan as defined with the Competing Values Framework. The combining of these factors have successfully given Google the ability to sense and respond to market opportunities rapidly, without becoming encumbered in "analysis paralysis" and instead getting goals accomplished quickly. The bottom line is that Google has created a highly unique culture that nurtures and values innovation over and above complacency and the status quo. What is Google's mission statement? There is a very high level of congruence of the type of organization Google has created based on the competing values framework and its culture. At the foundation of the Google strategy for nurturing and sustaining a culture that is centered on innovation is the ability to make creativity and the solving of complex problems a core value of their culture. Google makes creativity and the solving of complex problems central to their culture by concentrating on celebrating innovation that spans a global set of customers, as Gmail does, in addition to Google Finance. The need to continually innovate to create a differentiated company is critical for their survival. By focusing on these aspects of their culture they are continually creating a continual stream of innovation.

It would be fascinating to work for Google, as there are many opportunities to continually learn new concepts, techniques and approaches to managing information in conjunction with developing applications for the Internet. It would also be fascinating to be part of a culture that changes so rapidly, has such a strong sense of Clan, and can quickly re-invent itself in light of entirely new market trends. There are also the fascinating aspects of working in a culture so focused on creating an adhocracy aimed at driving up creativity and innovation over merely embracing the status quo and complacency over time. I am sure the culture is not perfect and it would also be fascinating to see how the company deals with challenges from market forces over time.
