Please consider this part of my application for admittance to the School of Health and Human Services for your Master of Science degree program in public health (M.S.P.H.). The program especially interests me because of its focus on interdisciplinary studies and the advanced training it offers for applications to community health practice and research.

A grew up and was educated in Monrovia, Liberia, where I attended Tudman National Institute of Medical Arts School of Nursing. The program included 33.3 contact hours of intravenous therapy, 19 contact hours of advanced cardiac life support, management seminars, and a critical care course. My graduation from nursing school occurred during a time of great civil unrest. I worked in a clinic where the patients who were seen had all been negatively affected in some way by the war. Women and children were often significantly malnourished and dehydrated, and some were suffering from water borne diseases because the water system had been destroyed.

My mother is a nurse, and as a child I always admired what she did. I had no problem deciding what my profession would be! I also have a sister who is a nurse and am happy to report that I was instrumental in helping her to get her education. I see myself as a giver and provider, and I wouldn't trade what I do for the world. I am married with three beautiful daughters whom I secretly hope will want to be nurses when they grow up.

A became a registered nurse in 1992; then, I traveled to the United States in 1993 to take the State boards, passed, and got my RN license here. Now I am eager to attend graduate school, advance, and go on with my education.

As a nurse I have worked in rehabilitation, home health geriatric care, cardiac care, and intensive care units. I am enclosing my resume so you can see the specific places I have served. I also have held various managerial positions including Unit Manager, Administrative Supervisor, and Assistant Director of Nursing. I have been told that my work demonstrates maturity, intelligence and conscientiousness, qualities I know will serve me well and help me to excel in my graduate work.
