Construction methods

In constructing this coat, it is important to ascertain that all the pieces including the shoulder seams and the collar are well sized and aligned. The blended wool material should give the coat a good structure as a result of the fabric stiffness.

In addition, the curve of the pattern should be set at the high shoulder well fitting into the pea coat's body. The length of the coat should be measured from the seam at the point where the collar seam joins the body to the hem, and that should be 32.5." this length however, should be slightly longer to allow sewing of the ends. The sleeves of the coat are the most critical of all the pieces; they are measured from the seam joining the shoulder to the cuff. This needs to be a straight line and not following the elbow bend and in this design and size the measurement is 25." Here the measurement should be taken from the middle of the neck, under the collar all the way to the cuff, along the elbow bend.

When joining the shell and the lining, the lining (polyester) should be 1 inch shorter and has the shell for the center panels. All the seams are sown together; the sleeves and the collar are added for the two sets (Shell and lining). The sewing together can be done either by hand or machine. The shell is then turned inside out then they are layered right sides attached by turning the lining right side out into the shell. The corners and the seam allowances are then neatly trimmed after which the whole coat is pulled out through a gap left on one side of the seam. After pulling the coat and setting it right, the gap is then hand sown. The picture below is a graphical representation of the construction process.

This belted wool-blend pea coat is in expensive apparel that does not incorporate high end material or stitching. The shell is a blend and not 75% reprocessed wool as the other expensive pea coats in the market retailing at an average of 300 dollars. It is quite fashionable and compares well with others in the market. The impression by the button, tonal panels and seam stitching as well as the slanted pockets adds a polished look. In addition, the double-breast gives it a traditional design that has been proven to be most attractive throughout the years. Considering these features, the coat is well priced and offers both style and comfort to the wearer. The pea coat is a classic, and can be worn to various out door functions in the cold weather. However, the quality of the shell is less likely to offer total protection against cold weather. The blended wool with 48% polyester, 45% wool, 4% acrylic, 2% rayon, and 1% nylon is of a lesser quality compared to other high end pea coats in the market.
