Herbert Spencer Was Born in Derby, England

Last reviewed: November 20, 2012 ~4 min read

Herbert Spencer was born in Derby, England and lived between the years 1820-1903. He was an English biologist, sociologist and philosopher and was considered a coarse social Darwinist. It was Spencer who coined the well-known expression "survival of the fittest." His social philosophy was coterminous with reaction rendering it something more than a 'biological apology for laissez-faire.' (Weinstein, 2012) He was a social evolutionist although he was never crudely social Darwinist. He is now referred to as a liberal utilitarian who delved heavily in evolutionary theory so as to explain the manner in which our liberal utilitarian sense of justice emerges. His significant contribution 'The Principles of Ethics' rested on a complicated 'evolutionary moral psychology' blending associationism, utility, intuitionism and use-inheritance. The activity that produces pleasure has the tendency to spawn "biologically inheritable associations among certain types of action, pleasurable feelings and feelings of approval." (Weinstein, 2012)

Thomas Huxley:

Huxley lived in Middlesex, England between the years 1825-1895 contributing to the field of biology, education and is seemingly the frontrunner and advocate of science and a staunch Darwin supporter. His works span a wide variety of medium and forums like presentations, essays, articles, book reviews, classroom teachings where he elucidated and defended the universe of science. He was popularly acknowledged as the epitome of the professional scientist who emerged in the nineteenth century from the shackles of ecclesiastical authority and aristocratic patronage. He presented himself as a man of science with moral and religious thoughts, not a scientist. He remained as the greatest public spokesman for science in his century and regarded as the most eloquent spokesman known to mankind. (Jensen, 1991)

Sir Ronald Fisher:

Sir Fisher lived from 1890-1962 and was an English Statistician, eugenicist, evolutionary biologist and geneticist. The most popular of his contribution is the "third party consultation" construct within the confines of Interactive Conflict Resolution -- ICR that captures the most important components of the methodology through several components including the identity and role of the third party and objectives of the method. Fisher's presented a more exhaustive definition of ICR stating it to be as facilitated one-on-one activities in communication, education or consultation that helps in promotion of collaborative conflict analysis, problem solving features and reconciliation among the conflicting parties in a way that deals with the basic human needs and promotes peace building, justice and equality. This broader net embodies interactions among antagonists across the social strata right from the grassroots up till the leadership and gives a wider set of identities as well as roles for the third-party interveners. (Fisher, 2005)
