ESL Student 1 & 2 Submissions
Do you agree with Alharbi's original order of VLS?
Alharbi states that ELs cannot acquire the vocabulary the first time interacting with it, they need "at least 5-16 times the exposure to master new words" (Alharbi, 2015, p. 502). The author further estimated that native English speaking high school students enter their high school studies with approximately eighteen thousand words in their total vocabularies. Therefore, for an ESL student to expect the same level of fluency, they will have to learn an immense amount of new vocabulary words and thus the order of VLS tactics can be an important success factor. I do believe that the order of the VLS priorities identified by the questionnaire is a good beginning strategy for most students. However, given the prevalence of different learning styles, it should also be noted that individuals may have to customize their own strategies to achieve their ideal performances.
Do think these strategies can be used with any age group, not just college students? Which questionnaire response surprised you the most?
Yes, I do believe that the VLS strategy could be used with a broad range of different age groups and also varying levels of ELLs. The finding that surprised me the most was the importance of synonyms in...
Teaching ESL Students At least 3.5 million children every year are identified as possessing limited English proficiency and require additional support before they are mainstreamed into the regular classroom environment (Miller & Endo 2004: 786). Approaches to ESL instruction run the gamut from total immersion to fostering a largely bilingual approach to education for this group of students. The two typical program approaches are that of a transitional bilingual education
21-32; Lyster et al., 1999, pg. 457-467). Chaudron (1986, pg. 64-84) explained that the error correction exercise might not have statistical backup on its constrictive impact but nonetheless has proven to have a beneficial impact on the overall communicational skills of the students. Many researchers (Birdsong, 1989 as cited in Wen, 1999, pg. 1-22) agree that the benefits for adult ESL students are extensive as they learn the practical
There is also the question of what approach should be used in a given setting. For instance, Lewis-Moreno points out that, "A great deal of energy is expended selecting and defending the model used: Should it be late- or early-exit bilingual, dual language, or English immersion?" (2007, p. 773). Although complex problems require complex solutions, a common theme that runs through the relevant literature concerns the need to use
Mathematics Instruction in English on ELL Second Grade Students J. Elizabeth Estevez Educ2205I-Content Research Seminar Mathematics is a powerful tool for interpreting the world. Research has shown that for children to learn how to use mathematics to organize, understand, compare, and interpret their experiences, mathematics must be connected to their lives.
