Enterprise Car Rental

What practices at Enterprise Rent-a-Car demonstrate that they value their employees?

The founder of the company, Jack Taylor started out with the simple yet powerful motto "take care of your customers and your employees first and growth and profits will follow." (ERAC, 2012) The company when started in 1957 was predicted to be a failure because leasing cars did not exist then as a business. The CEO then took the initiative in leasing cars, which has become common now. In the decades that followed cars began to be rented even on a day-to-day basis and today the CEO and president is Pam Nicholson who is a person not from the Taylor family. She has been declared one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes. While the motto of the founder is carefully nurtured even today, additionally the company provides an inclusive workplace and better training with vast diversity. (ERAC, 2012)

The company units serve the community where it is located. They thus are able to mirror the community they operate with. Headquartered at St. Louis, the company actively recruits a diverse workforce for which they have liaison with organizations like "National and Local organizations such as: Women for Hire, The National Urban League Black Executive Exchange Program "BEEP," Monster DLP, National Association of Black Accountants, The Black Collegian, the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, and many more." (ERAC, 2012) This practice is also followed at the North American and European enterprises. The company has minority focus groups with programs for diversity orientation and many more features that make the company unique.

How does the corporate culture of Enterprise motivate and empower employees?

Enterprise rent a car is an example of a company that is far away from places where the rent a car would work, like airports, and ports. It has a presence in the local neighborhood -- this is based on the culture it fosters. The employees are all transformed into entrepreneurs by their own motivation. The method followed for this is by recruiting college graduates who begin by working from the basics -- washing and parking the cars, and teaching them the methods of building long-term relationships with the customers. They then progress up the ranks until they are ready to manage a branch as an entrepreneur. They all come out as very hard working entrepreneurs. They pick up many traits of leaders like humility, and vast local knowledge. They then adapt to the different markets where they are stationed. They also have greater diversity and thus have a very great coordinated team. (Kotler; Kartajaya; Setiawan, 2010) Competencies that have to be developed necessarily require that there be changes effected in these cultures which can be done by the actual performance of the top executives who by following them can help spread the core values.

What is the relationship between a motivated workforce and a company's bottom line?

The company was founded by Jack Taylor, whose mission and motto was to take care of employees first. Thus concentrating on these changes will bring about a change in the organization and this can be a beginning. Individual values could be based on professional ethics and needs, organizational values, community values, and the social values that change from country to country and place to place. The tapping of inner values and thus creating a leader from the worker whose vision also encompasses the core belief of the corporate entity is the success of the leader. Thus the inner self of the individual must be in tandem with the corporate mission. Leaders ensure that these core values are imbibed by the personnel in such a way that they make it a part of their personality. Diversity can both create growth, inflow of ideas and also bring with it problems, and this core values are the important thing for the management of the business with success and without conflict.
