¶ … EMS Emergency responders are usually faced with diverse kinds of situations in relation to responding to emergencies. These diverse kinds of situations require effective decision making and strategies for emergency services given the volatile nature of emergency response and the various significant uncertainties. In addition to the need for effective decision-making and strategies, emergency response also requires proper coordination and communication between various groups and authorities involved in the rescue process. The need for effective strategies and adequate communication and coordination is because of their role in enhancing the effectiveness of emergency response services.

Necessary Preparations for an Incident Commander

One of the most important strategies for effective emergency management services is adequate preparations by an incident commander before a crisis in emergency response. The first preparation required for an incident commander before a crisis in emergency response is the establishment of a unified command. The incident commander is required to set up a unified command comprising the fire commander and the medical commander (Rimstad et. al., 2014, p.30). The unified command should be mandated with the task of planning and coordinating response and/or rescue initiatives in case of an emergency. This process would require maintaining contact with respective operational centers and maintaining tight control of the rescue centers.
The third necessary preparation for an incident commander before the occurrence of a crisis is seeking external expertise for rescue operations. Seeking for external expertise is part of the commander's work to search for relevant information to aid response and/or rescue operations. Moreover, the external expertise helps in improving the decision-making capabilities of the incident commander in order to enhance the overall effective of emergency response. The final necessary preparation is to ensure that the incident commander has special training for incident commanding for effectiveness in the various responsibilities associated with this position. The special training provides a greater understanding of the various issues related to coordination of emergency response, especially frontline operations.

Importance of Coordination and Communication Issues

While there are some necessary preparations for an incident commander before a crisis in emergency response, strategies for effective EMS involve ensuring proper coordination and communication of rescue operations.
