Gender is often referred to as any socially assigned roles given to a certain gender be it a male or a female. This gender is normally expected to act in a way familiar to the expectation of the society or the people around him or her Butler, 1990.

Gender roles and responsibilities is usually different both in females and males and the roles can be assigned at any setting such as a workplace, community, in the churches and in a family unit among other. But the main difference arises among the various cultures existing because of their beliefs and customs present among them. Gender complements both the physiological and the biological differences existing between the female and the males Lippa, 2002.

A certain gender has been associated with a given role because of the stereotyping associated with that gender. Therefore, these existing stereotyping may often limit the roles of a specific gender only because those around him or her expects him/her to behave in a certain manner.

Dr. Gregory House, a leading actor in the Fox TV show the 'House', display a great sense of masculinity in most of the episodes presented. The show is based on a clinical setting whereby Dr. House is the Head of Diagnostic department. As a man, he is expected to lead his team comprising of four doctors. All the other doctors look upon him for advice and guidance on what should be done or how to go about the diagnosis. Within the hospital, the patient relies or even request to be attended by Doctor House because the society has viewed the male sex as dominant over the female sex. Even though, there are many more other female doctors with a good diagnostic background, given that Dr. House is a man; he is thought to have the right judgment of the diagnosis since the patient think that he is impartial Calasanti, 2001()

Dr. House brings out the aspect of insensitivity, arrogance and uncaring attitude. Being a male the society expects him to have different behaviors and characteristics than that of a female. Unlike the female gender, which is expected to be caring, loving, compassionate and sympathetic, Dr. House is seen to portray the opposite of what the female counterpart would. Some of these characteristic is what brings out the difference between the two genders Peters J, 2005()

Dr. House also brings up the aspect of masculinity and domineering when he clashes with some of his colleagues and even going ahead to do things which is not allowed by the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. He defies some of the warning given by the administrator especially some of which he thinks are right. Dr. House brings out the concept of dominance as shown by the male species, he does not like to be challenged neither does he like to be stopped at whatever he does be it by law or medical ethics.

Dr. House is seen to befriend only those who do not seem to be a threat in his line of work, that's why his only friends is Dr. James Wilson, who is the person in charge or heading the oncology department. Dr. House likes to mark his territory and only flashes out those who think or would like to challenge his authority or judgment. Wherever someone challenges him, all he does is to give him a difficult task which, failure to complete that task warrants the next step of action on the doctor's side, which is to, be removed from the team or his or her failure will force him or her to be ashamed hence less involvement.

In the earlier episode, after his operation Dr. House goes ahead and misuses the drug he was being given to reduce the pain, he even goes ahead to increase his alcohol consumption rate as alcohol consumption is common among men. This addiction becomes intense that he ends up stealing prescription which makes him be taken to a rehabilitation center then later to jail. At the jail, he also establishes his territory so as to help him survive the harsh environment. All these bring out the aspect of masculinity and how a man is expected to fend for himself no matter the environment.

Dr. House also brings out the trait in men of being a risk taker. At his area of specialization, Dr. House is seen making very many risks in his diagnostics some of which are very fatal when poorly done or they are nonresponsive with the patient. Another trait shown by Dr. House is that he is a very hardworking man; he always stops at nothing unless he sees that the patient has responded in the treatment. He always thinks of all the possible treatment methods, and whenever he remembers some missing information or idea which was to help him find some cure to the patient, he leaves all that he was to do to attend to the sick person. While the other team members are panicking or even give up for a failure to save a life, Dr. House still thrives to find the cure for the ailment many of which he does. This shows how much he is in control of all situations, whether favorable or not. Dr. House is also seen to be ambitious when he thinks of trying out a certain new idea which is not ethical or among the professionally right treatment method though severally he is warned not to go for such ideas because the hospital might be sued by the client, he still bold and determined to save the patient's right no matter unprofessional the treatment method would be.
