Effective prevention and support programs for families experiencing issues of domestic abuse involve an extremely wide range of social welfare service providers. In recent years researchers have constructed a very convincing case in support of interprofessional collaboration between key social service providers who are typically involved in domestic abuse services (Reeves et al., 2008). Key services providers may include healthcare workers, police, social workers, mental health providers, and lawyers. Active collaboration and communication between these providers will clearly increase the likelihood that victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse receive effective treatment and progress towards recovery.

When considering examples and models for intercollaboration between services providers its essential to factor the needs of domestic abuse victims. Victims may be both adults or children, and they may present with a wide variety of needs including health issues or injuries, a need for safe housing, mental health needs, issues with employment or schooling, and legal issues related to prospective restraining orders against their abusers or in some cases criminal prosecution of their abusers. Effective services would, therefore, involve in-depth collaboration between social workers, police, attorneys, and counselors or psychologists (Forgey, M, Collarossi, L, 2003). In some cases, for example, a social worker may have to advocate for a client's safety and interests in a court case, and this may require proactive communication between the social worker, and attorney, and a mental health provider.

Perpetrators of domestic abuse also play a critical role in this very serious social issue. In many cases couples and families experiencing domestic abuse can't improve their relationships or alter cycles of domestic abuse without appropriate and effective intervention from human services providers. This may often include the incarceration and successful prosecution of a perpetrator, but should also ideally involve the successful treatment and rehabilitation of the individual. As such, services providers including police, public defenders, prosecutors, probation officers, social workers, and psychologists should all be expected to collaborate in order to ensure that perpetrators are held responsible for their abusive behaviors. These providers should also be working to ensure that perpetrators are offered effective opportunities and tools to correct dysfunctional behaviors that ultimately result in incidents of domestic abuse (Roffman et al., 2008).
