¶ … dental hygienist ?
I still remember everything about her: the way she smiled, the easy way she chatted as she worked, the toothbrushes and good advice she never failed to impart before I left. I was privileged to have had an exceptional dental hygienist while I was growing up. Susana was always nice and personable, professional and knowledgeable, and helped me to develop the good dental hygiene habits I have today. She made my trips to the dentist fun, and is one of the chief reasons that I decided to pursue this profession which I only associated with her most of the time I was in primary and secondary school.
Susana helped to steer my career decision towards the path of a dental hygienist in many ways. Early on, when she asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I impetuously told her I wanted her job. I help people because it is all I want to do. For me, the Dental Hygienist Program fulfills these two key personality traits. I love to learn and I need to help. As a dental hygienist, I will be able to do both of these things. The program will challenge me and give me great insight into the field of dentistry. Perhaps one day I will be able to move
Having a professional to talk to is very important, and a dentist can sometimes be extremely busy and not as available for consultation without making a separate appointment and paying extra. A hygienist generally has a bit more time to talk to patients, and while I would be limited in my duties and my ability to advise patients, I would not be limited in my joy and my encouragement
Dental Human papillomavirus (HPV) is increasingly being recognized as a province of general oral hygiene, making dentists and dental hygienists responsible for recognizing warning signs. HPV is a risk factor for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, a form of oral cancer. It may also be a risk factor in other oropharynx diseases, including cancers of the tonsil and tongue (American Dental Association, 2013). As many as 63% of oral cancers diagnosed have
Gadbury-Amyot (2005) examined how well a multifaceted approach to formal ethics instruction that includes community-based service-learning can improve learning and influence the students' attitudes and perceptions about their role as oral healthcare providers in such areas as access to care, disparity, and working in a diverse community. Students noted that service-learning was both professionally and personally enriching and made a significant impact on their person view as providers of health
