Praise dancing is somewhat similar to jazz dancing for the simple fact that for a long time, the only place that African-Americans could legally gather was in church or during church related functions.
Step dancing is actually one of my favorite forms of dancing. I have managed to go to a step show or two, and they were always lots of fun. The music is great and the positivity of (mostly) young college students interacting with one another in this way is good to see. At the couple of step shows I've been to, it actually seems like the competitive aspect enhances the performances and the reaction from the crowd. Different fraternities and sororities do not get too competitive, yet are still enthusiastic about doing well for their respective sides.
