Non-Denominational Christian

Labeling oneself a Christian should be sufficient to allow people to understand some basics about personality and faith, regardless of one's denomination within Christianity. However, there are many people out there who self-identify as Christians, whose beliefs seem to contradict Christ's teachings. There is a tremendous amount of hatred, violence, and discrimination committed in the name of Christ, which is as far from being Christ-like as possible. Therefore, while part of my belief is that it is not a Christian's place to judge whether or not another person is a Christian, part of my belief is that hatred is not a part of Christ's doctrine.

As a Christian, I believe in single God, who has existed from the beginning of time and will exist until the end of time. While there is a single God, he has manifested himself in three distinct forms, that of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. I believe that the Bible is a divinely inspired book, which reveals God's plan for the human race. However, I also believe that it is impossible to take every word of the Bible literally, because there are contradictions contained in the Bible. This demonstrates that, while divinely inspired, the Bible is not infallible. Therefore, as a Christian, I believe that I have a duty to study different versions and translations of the Bible, to come to my own understanding of God's word. I also do not believe that the Bible must be taken literally, but that it can be allegorical. Therefore, science and religion do not have to contradict one another. I believe that Jesus was the best example of human perfection in this earth, and that his sacrifice replaced the need of other symbolic sacrifices. Through a relationship with Christ, people can be forgiven their sins and live in eternity with God. Those who reject that relationship with Christ are no less God's children than those who embrace that relationship with Christ.

How the Christian Worldview Influences My Approach to Criminal Justice

Depending upon one's orientation, the field of criminal justice can be one that concentrates on redemption, one that concentrates on punishment, or one with a myriad number of different concentrations, which may compete with one another. The American criminal justice system is one that focuses on punishment, with very little room for redemption. To many, such an approach makes it seem like a Christian might not be able to play a role in the American criminal justice system.
