Creating Writing Anthony Maxwell Gilbert Term Paper

He remembered his mother's face when he questioned her. He remembered Lucia taking him aside and explaining to him how life is and is not always how it seems. "Nothing has changed," she said. "Your mother is still your mother, and life will go on. Be grateful you are not female or your fate would be written." And she was right about that. Had he been born a girl, he would most likely already have been one of Adorabella's whores, just like his mother and grandmother. By the time room and board, medical needs and other essentials were accounted for, the women had little if anything left to save. And the same was true for the men who worked the ranch. No one except Adorabella made money. It was decided that he should leave and arrangements were made for Tony to work on a ranch in New Mexico. The ranch belonged to an acquaintance of a friend of Adorabella. He worked for room and board until he was eighteen. By that time, he spoke near-perfect English and had enough education and experience to warrant decent wages....

He had always planned to send for his mother when he could afford it, but she had died from pneumonia about three years after he had left. Donna had died when he was seven, and like his mother, he too never knew his father. It could have been anyone, from bankers to gangsters.
Lucia had been right. Life does go on. Tony never told Mary the truth about his family, although it wasn't all lies. He told her that his mother and grandmother, both widowed, worked as domestic help on a large ranch in Brazil, and that after they died, he was sent to New Mexico to live. Whether Mary believed the story or not, he didn't know. But she never questioned him. She never pried too deeply. Maybe she knew there was more to his life that he couldn't share. He suspected that was true.

The stars now twinkled in the night sky like the waves in the moonlight. Tony had no regrets. Elena and Donna were his angels. Perhaps they had played a part that day at the fair. Tony walks in to answer the phone, it's Mary.
