The campus is all abuzz about a nearly $30 million dollar USD Learning Resource Center that is being built on the Suffolk County Community College campus. The center, which will be known as the LRC for short, will have a grand total of nearly 75,000 square feet and will also include a library. The entire complex will be located on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood, New York. While the price tag is huge, it has already been paid for between Suffolk County and the state of New York. Ground was recently broken for the center.
Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees Chairwoman Dafny Irrizary was quoted as saying that "libraries are not only repositories of knowledge, but also of our aspirations." She continued by saying "The new Learning Resource Center will be a critical component of our college that will enable us to better servce our students and the communities surrounding our Michael J. Grant campus."
Also pleased with the recent ground-breaking was New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. He was quoted as saying "I am pleased to see the progress of the new Learning Resource Center. It's important that we provide students with the means to further their academic studies and knowledge. I know that this new building will be instrumental in assisting Suffolk Community College Students in their future endeavors
The new Learning Resource Center will include a lecture hall that can seat nearly one hundred people, a writing center, a reading center, a bevy of computer labs, a good number of tutoring rooms, some testing rooms, a series of offices for people that work in the new building, an information commons, a room for the Board of Trustees, a teaching and learning center, a photo/video studio and many other features.
Construction is expected to be completed in eighteen months.
