There is no significant relationship between having a higher perception of a sport as elite and having a lower willingness to participate.

Here the key concerns will consist of social and cultural perceptions of a sport and how these impact on willingness to try the sport.

Summary. The committee believes that in order to successfully offer archery and fencing as sports in the community program, these level-of-difficulty and social-psychological concerns about the two possible sport offerings must be understood. Obviously, the study of each research question above will inform the other, as both archery and fencing have had similar prestige perceptions in the general public for decades (See for example, Crawford, 1977; and Riess, 1980). Through study of such perceptions as a sport being too hard or too specialized or too privileged or the like, the survey data will provide information which can be used to determine the viability of archery and fencing in the community programming agenda.
