¶ … Chinese-American born in Victorville, California and raised in Los Angeles. As a child, my parents were recent immigrants who had to struggle to establish themselves here in the United States. Although they were eventually successful, they had to initially work hard to a build a small import/export company and to obtain U.S. Citizenship. We first lived in a very modest one bedroom, one bath apartment for a family of four. English is a second language that I did not learn until grammar school; I had learned Mandarin and Chinese at home. In the beginning, the financial, cultural and language barriers distanced me from my class mates and added extra challenges to doing well in school. I also felt isolated because I was the only student of Asian ethnicity in my class which it made it more difficult for me to make new friends. However, I adapted over time thanks to the support and encouragement of my parents. They placed a high value on my education and tried to provide the best of everything...

My parent's example has given me a strong wok ethic and a drive to succeed. And, I have also gained an appreciation for the value of having exposure to multiple cultures and languages. Today's world is increasingly interconnected and I have found that international knowledge is a major benefit in the business community.
