Charter Schools: Wave Of The Essay

A Minnesota Charter school is now at the center of a controversy that even has concerned the ACLU about its composition and intolerance. In addition, to make matters worse, issues of teacher accreditation have come up that threaten to compromise the excellence that have made charter schools the alternative choice for many parents ("Madrassa masquerading as," 2009). In the opinion of this author, it is time to get back to the basics in terms of the charter school movement and return to the core of the H-B Woodlawn model. While a "hippie high" may not be acceptable to conservatives, they need to look at what may be lurking on the sidelines. While today it might be Islamic fundamentalists, it might be Christian fundamentalists tomorrow.

The charter school model is based upon trust and tolerance. These bedrock principles need to be emphasized. In addition, children, parents, and community organizations (especially the religious ones) need to realize that their participation in this plum program is contingent upon their tolerance of others and an adherence to the high academic standards of charter schools. If these standards of mutual tolerance and academic excellence are not adhered to, the student will be asked to go elsewhere. Things have to be kept this simply to keep preserve the charter school movement.

As mentioned in detail above, religious and ethnic intolerance jeopardizes this innovative test ground for educational change. Again, the author sees it as the best alternative for the future of education in America. However, the basic traditions of ethnic and religious tolerance as well as academic excellence must be maintained at all costs and...

Without sticking to the core "hippie" values, we will loose what is so special and so American about the charter school movement.
