Characteristics of Leaders

There are several characteristics that successful leaders are considered to have. Most theories on leadership state that such traits refer to integrity, self-esteem, confidence, empathy, organizational skills, good judgment, initiative, courage, endurance, they are proactive, they have visionary skills, communication skills, and others. There are numerous combinations of skills that characterize the great leaders of the world.

However, there are individuals that posses such skills, but that do not become leaders. Certain theories consider that leadership is an innate skill that cannot be developed. In the case of individuals that have such skills but do not become leaders, this situation can be attributed to the fact that they lack the desire to lead. They are not interested in becoming an example for others, or in managing groups or teams.

Other leadership traits are represented by the ability to boost the self-esteem of leaders' employees (Brooks, 2012). This is because it is important that the leader help these employees discover and develop their potential. They have to reveal possibilities to their followers. In other words, their follower must believe that they can do better. Great leaders do not focus on putting the blame on others. They admit their part of the blame, and help their employees improve their performance.

Another characteristic of successful leaders is represented by innovation. These leaders have the ability to invent new processes, activities that are intended to improve situations. The vision developed by these leaders is based on innovation that can provide significant advantages. Certain specialists in the field consider that the difference between leaders and followers is represented by the ability to innovate.

In the case of interviewing a candidate for a CEO position it is important to identify candidates that reveal characteristics of participative leadership style. The most important leadership styles are represented by the autocratic or authoritarian style, the democratic or participative style, the charismatic, the transactional, the transformational style, and others. Each of these leadership styles is efficient under certain circumstances. Therefore, it is important to understand the fact that the leader must be able to adapt to these different circumstances in the attempt to make the most of each situation.

The participative leadership style is characterized by the leader involving his subordinates in the decision making process. In this case the decision making process is a decentralized one. There are several advantages of the participative leadership style. These leaders reveal great confidence and trust in their subordinates. These subordinates get the signal that they are worth the leader's trust. Their self-esteem increases, and their performance can also improve.

By involving subordinates in the decision making process, the leader also improves their knowledge (Murray, 2012). This is because in order to make decisions, employees must possess certain information and knowledge. In addition to this, they also improve their ability to make decisions.

The participative leadership style determines increased communication within the team. This is because in order to make decisions, team members must share information and experience. They also increase the trust and improve relationships within the team. However, it is important that the leader is able to determine how much participation is healthy from employees.

It is important that the leader focuses on job rotation. This strategy is useful in improving the different skills that employees have, and that are required by different types of jobs. This is also intended to reduce the routine levels within the company. The decision making process' efficiency is increased in the case of employees with different skills. This is because these different skills help them see situations from different points-of-view. Therefore, they can provide out of the box solutions.

However, the participative leader must also determine the level of freedom of each employee. In case the participative leadership style is taken to extremes, employees can consider that the leader has less authority in comparison with what he should have. In other words, the leader must also reveal his authority when necessary. The leader must determine the team to function as independently as possible. This means that the team does not rely on the input of the leader in order to get things done.

The participative leader must determine employees to improve their performance. The motivational strategy developed by the leader must be a flexible one, in the attempt to address the different needs of employees. In other words, the leader must study his team members, and identify the factors that motivate them. Based on this study, the leader must develop a motivational strategy through which employees are determined to improve their performance.
