¶ … Cashew fruit Maranon.

Cashews (also known as Maranon) are fruits from the cashew tree and originate in tropical America. It is easy to confuse the actual cashew fruit as a result of its appearance, as it has a peduncle uniting it to the tree. Some people experience trouble eating this fruit because they either believe that they should eat the peduncle or that they can eat the fruit itself without roasting it first. Trying to bite on the shell results in a very bitter taste and the fruit is actually poisonous in its raw version (Blake, 2009, p. 105). The peduncle is similar to a paprika while the nut is smaller, tough, and it is positioned outside of the paprika-like peduncle.

The peduncle separating the seed from the tree can be dried and it tastes like a combination between a prune and a fig. Its color varies and it can be either red, yellow, or orange. The peduncle has a smooth skin and it tastes sweet and fermented. Many individuals growing it locally make a drink from the peduncle, but it is difficult to transport these fruits on account of the skin being fragile and the peduncle itself thus being easily squashed. "In Panama for example they sell fresh Maranon juice or they make popsicle, which are quite popular as the weather is hot and humid and this sort of treat is always inviting and refreshing." Even with the fact that cashews are especially tasty, it is important for the person cooking them to be experienced. Roasting the fruits in a closed environment can release toxic fumes and can irritate the lungs of individuals present. Eating the fruit without properly cooking it is impossible, as it is not comestible. The fruit and the peduncle contain substances that make them particularly dangerous for clothes and it is very difficult for stains to come off, as they are typically permanent.

The Portuguese and the French relate to the fruit as the "caju." "The Spanish word is actually the name of a state in Northeast Brazil: Maranhao (mah-rah-NYOW, with the last syllable uttered through the nose), the area where Europeans probably had their first exposure to the fruit." (Rogol, 2010, p. 48)

The Maranon fruit is very healthy and has a series of beneficial effects on the bodies of individuals consuming it. The consumer's immune system is seriously reinforces as a result of eating the fruit, as it contains numerous vitamins. Individuals eating the product on a daily basis have reported that consuming it has been associated with the person experiencing better memory, longer life, and an increase in libido (Maranon, Fruit And Nut Tree !).
