Undergraduate Business -- Why?

Up to this point of my academic career, the biological applications of research on human genes have been the focus of my areas of study rather than marketing jeans. Yet both the human organism and the organizational framework of a business call forth upon managers to deploy their analytical skills.

After taking a De-cal on biotechnology my second semester of freshman year, I recognized that what most appealed to me about genetics, as a science was its immediate applicability to the needs of human health and life. Genetics is a science that originates in the study of the human body. The knowledge gleaned through studying genes can be deployed directly from the lab to the bodies of people.

Moreover, the current concerns of the pharmaceutical industry regarding product testing and advertising new medications show that a biological basis for knowledge is not only useful, but may be necessary to excel in all spheres of the medical industry. Similarly, the new innovations in gene research also raise ethical and insurance-related issues that benefit from, and even require a joint background in business and biology.

I believe that most successful people in the field of biotechnology are comfortable with the language of science as well as possess an economic understanding of the implications of science. Taking the actively discussion-based class Business 1 gave me my first taste of marketing and the sense of what it like to become part of a working environment and culture. Working with motivated and creative undergrad business students encouraged me to excel, to stretch myself as a learner, and also to bring my own unique experiences from science to the classroom.
