Burglary: causes, prevention, and legal consequences

Last reviewed: November 8, 2011 ~3 min read

Police report one has to be detailed and specific, yet simple in their descriptions.

A police report is the documentation of a crime which has been committed, written by the person who has documented the event's details. This must be done with a level of detail that will allow a proper investigation by the police. The job of the police officer or official is to help the victim or incident reporter document a crime scene comprehensively.

Every good police report has to summarize the event effectively to make sure to communicate in a succinct and clear manner. Secondly, one must describe the scene and state what the alleged crime was. Such questions will include who was involved in the crime and when and where the crime took place. Thirdly, one must use simple language in the report. This will include statements from victims and witnesses. The statements are required to be verbatim as to what a witness or victim related about the event. Fourthly, the police officer or police clerk must have the witness and/or the victim sign the police report as verification that the statement accurately reflects what was said about the crime. All during the report process, it is important to get complete names and contact information for the witnesses and victims, and include driver's license numbers when possible. One must note any knowledge of any of the suspects based on the crime scene, the witnesses and the victims, but also must remain objective (Moss, 2011).

The forms and formats of police reports will vary widely among police departments. However, all of them should contain the same information as related above. Some police departments may be fully computerized, and field reports can be filled out digitally from the patrol vehicle. However, many police departments have discovered that computers in a field environment have to have extensive technical, meaning that paper will not die out soon. Likely, there will never be a police department with a completely paper-less information system (Police report writing, 2011). Until then, the basics of report writing will remain the same and is the bread and butter of law enforcement.
