Aviation

For decades human beings have been fascinated with flight and transportation. Aviation is a very important field of endeavor and requires a great deal of concentration and drive. The purpose of this discussion is to discuss how and why I will enter this field in college. We will begin by describing the importance of aviation in the world that we live in.

Importance of Aviation

Aviation is defined as "the science and practice of flight in heavier-than-air craft, including airplanes, gliders, helicopters, ornithopters, convertiplanes, and VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) and STOL (short takeoff and landing) craft."("Aviation")

There are three types of aviation which include commercial, military and general aviation. Commercial aviation involves chartered flights. ("Aviation")

Military aviation is used in cases of war and to provide security to a nation or a region. Finally, general aviation refers to recreational and instructional flight. It also includes the operation of crop dusters and other aircraft that do not have commercial or military uses. ("Aviation")

The concept of aviation came into fruition in the 1800's when scientist began to really explore the idea of human flight. The first actual flight took place in 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina when the Wright brothers flew the first airplane. ("Aviation")

Since this time aviation has grown at a record pace and air travel has become an essential part of the global economy.

Pursuing Aviation as a Major

The importance of this field has persuaded me to major in aviation in college; though my love of flying and aviation came when I was a child. At the age of 10, my family and I journeyed by airplane to Orlando, Florida. As I rode in the airplane I could see the beauty of the clouds and wondered what it would be like to fly an airplane. Now that I am about to enter college I am considering making aviation my career field. It seems inevitable because I love airplanes and I love to fly. I think that people should always pursue a career in a field that they are passionate about; it is the only real way to be happy. I am certainly passionate about flying and the aviation field.

Aviation is the field of choice for many students entering college. Many colleges now offer aviation as a major and allow students to pick a specialization within the field. These specializations include piloting, engineering and air traffic control. Many schools even allow students to study two specializations simultaneously, which can broaden post graduate opportunities tremendously.

I believe that a degree in aviation will put me on a career path filled with opportunities. As I stated earlier I can pursue a career as a commercial pilot or a general pilot, I may even opt to go into the military and become military pilot. I am also looking forward to learning as much about aviation as I possibly can. I hope that majoring in aviation will help me to appreciate flight even more.
