If a customer does not trust the mechanic, they probably will not return to the shop, and the certainly will not recommend them to others. Therefore, a mechanic must always be fair and honest, and never give the customer any reason do doubt his word or his actions.

A good mechanic stands by his work, as well. The shop should offer a warranty, and they should stand behind that warranty. A good mechanic knows his own capabilities, and what he can offer to the shop and the customer. Therefore, he should not be uncomfortable about certifying his work and offering a warranty on it. If they are not comfortable with certain procedures and such, they should think about safety and the customer, rather than simply going ahead with the repair.
A good mechanic is always concerned about safety, as well. Their own safety, as well as the customer's. A bad repair can cause an accident or worse, and a dirty, cluttered shop can create hazards for the people that work there. A mechanic should always make sure they practice safety in the shop and in their repairs. If a mechanic can be all these things, they are "certifiably" a good mechanic!
