Salesforce.com Case Qs
Salesfocre.com is a cloud computing company that provides information and database storage and retrieval services for a wide range of businesses large and small. The company has had some problems with database integrity in the past, with an especially bad service interruption in January of 2009 that left millions of individual customers without the service Salesforce.com provides, and another interruption several years prior to that led to similar problems. Salesforce.com has adopted a mirroring technology that will maintain a separate duplicate database and thus allow ongoing access and use even if one database is brought down.
The most important facts in this case involve the outage issues that Salesforce.com experienced and the other general security issues that have been raised with cloud computing and databasing. Legal and technical aspects of information handling and the manner in which various companies have met with and dealt with are both important issues to consider, from the perspective of those who are considering doing business with Salesforce.com and with other cloud-based information technology and solution providers. The specifics of Salesforce.com's own attempts at addressing the problems it has faced are also quite significant.

The key issues, given the above facts, are the problems that cloud computing companies have in earning the trust of their customers and potential customers, and of retaining that trust through the proper and adequate protection of data and provision of information technology and security services. This is demonstrated by the opening of the case, with identifies a company currently doing business with Salesforce.com and that so far is quite please with the service, but is somewhat apprehensive. This introductory company is never mentioned again in the case, yet the prevailing attitude in the case description is one of determining the security and appropriateness of cloud-based solutions for information technology processes, tasks, and storage needs. From this, the key issue of trustworthiness and apparent/perceived trustworthiness in cloud-based companies is the clear key issue.
