¶ … SWOT analysis for Apple
Strengths
Apple has a name renowned throughout the world as a pioneer of technological innovation and an extremely loyal customer base. There are people who will wait in line for hours to buy the newest Apple product and purchase virtually whatever Apple manufactures. Apple also has a reputation for producing quality products, as honed by its founder Steve Jobs for many years. Its iPhone, iPod, iPad, and other devices dominate the market in all their respective spheres. Apple has fanatically dedicated employees who are willing to work 60-70 hours per week to bolster Apple's creative offerings (Orlitzky, 2016, p. 6). Apple is extremely efficient in its use of organizational resources in generating new research and development, which results in considerable financial savings for the organization (Orlitzky, 2016, p. 7).
Weaknesses
The sudden loss of Steve Jobs meant that the guiding creative force which had shaped Apple's vision for so many years experienced a substantial setback. For many years, Jobs was synonymous with Apple. Although Apple has a creative culture, it does not offer the same perks or comfortable working environment as does its rival Google.
Opportunities
More and more people are using smartphones and tablets for their computing needs. The only corner of the market Apple does not currently dominate is PCs but this may enable Apple to make further encroachments upon Microsoft's market share. Apple continues to explore the use of potential streaming and other media offerings offered simultaneously on all of its platforms, to encourage users to patronize Apple products exclusively.
Threats
One detriment for Apple for many of its products is that they tend to be rather pricey. Google has begun to offer many innovative products, including its Chromebook, which offers a vastly cheaper alternative to the iPad (Orlitzky, 2016, p. 12). Similarly, Samsung has begun to offer competitive lines of low-cost mobile smartphones to rival the iPhone (Orlitzky, 2016, p. 13). This has made Samsung's products particularly attractive to developing world nations which operate at a lower price point. Google has also developed its rival Android line of smartphones. In the media streaming market, Apple will struggle to rival Amazon's Prime offerings which combine access to free shipping with television, movie, and other media.
