Abstract

The purpose of this report was to create a mock advocacy letter addressed to a health organization. The letter incorporates statistics from the World Health Organizations and provides a compelling case to assist and help the family in question.

Advocacy Letter

To whom it may concern,

Greetings, my name is Nurse, and I am writing to you at The New York Methodist Hospital in regards to a brewing public health crisis here in Brooklyn, NY. I am the primary care taker of the K. family that lives in this region and who is experiencing rather difficult circumstances surrounding the issue of public health. The purpose of this letter is to bring to your awareness the immediate need of your involvement towards helping the health conditions of the local environment by explaining the current circumstance I have experienced with the K. family.

A little background about the case: MK is an unemployed middle aged women who has been recently diagnosed with type I diabetes and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Her 21-year-old, daughter, LK and her one-year-old son a live in a cramped one bedroom apartment here in Brooklyn. Both MK and LK are serious smokers, both at least two packs a day, and appear to lack in parenting and health care skills. As a nurse I feel it is my duty to inform those who have the power to assist others in bringing about the end of unnecessary suffering and ill health. This is why I contacted your organization.

At New York Methodist Hospital it appears your organization can significantly contribute to the community at large and help lessen the likeliness of MK and LK's unfortunate situation. The size and power your organization demonstrates the potential to contribute to the solution of this problem.

Essentially MK's situation is witnessed quite frequently here in this neighborhood and more education and action is needed to help safeguard the future health of this environment. I feel further compelled to ask for your assistance after researching this topic. According to a report published by the World Health Organization, MK's situation is very risky. The risk factors associated with her behavior of using tobacco is one of the most serious and deadly. I have attached to this letter this data in hopes of further communicating this important fact.

It appears that at New York Methodist Hospital your many differing resources, especially those in your Institute for Family Care could help alleviate some of the problems not only for MK and her family, but also the community at large. MK's situation is not unique here in Brooklyn and your resources are very much in need here.

Specifically we are asking for more educational material and proactive intentions that will help eliminate the deadly cycle of ignorance. Preventive health care is certainly not as profitable as other means of treating illness, but in my opinion, organizations like yours has a moral and ethical responsibility to educate and inform as many people around the risks to public health ignorance and unwise behavior presents to the community as a whole.

If you have any further questions or are in need of more information please let me know as I can significantly relate an understanding of this community and the health risks it is currently undergoing. I appreciate any and all attention given to this matter by your organization and thank you for your attention. From my standpoint advocacy is necessary in order to bring local and specific circumstances to the attention of those who can best understand and remedy these problems. Your resources are very much needed her and your contributions will certainly promote healthy living for the community. We are only as strong as the weakest among us, please help and thank you for your time and attention.
