In 2010, 1 out of 5 Americans experienced mental illness as reported by the substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.5% of Americans have suffered from these mental illnesses which gas led to an interference with their daily lives, work or families. There is a lot of help that is at the disposal for anyone suffering from mental health problems. Resources such as therapists, locators, doctors and many others are available for anyone with mental health problems. Despite this many Americans who suffer from metal health problems often go without treatment. Every year only about 60% of people with mental health problems who get treatment (Conley, 2012).Whites and Native Americans are the ones who are more likely to get treatment as compared to Asians, African-Americans and Latinos.
Reasons why people do not seek treatment
Many Americans who suffer from significant mental health problems go without treatment because they are sacred of these mental health problems. People are scared of these conditions that they are in and they are certainly scared of getting help for these health problems in most cases people do not admit to the mental illnesses they often deny having these health conditions with the hope that it will go away. This fear of mental illnesses is often generated due to media stereotypes and misconceptions which are common among people on mental illnesses. This is mainly the reason why people do not want to admit they have mental health problems. The misunderstandings on the illnesses from the general public and the bad things that people often say about them do not help the situation either. It is quite scary for people who are suffering from these illnesses to face their dark side where the mental illness thrives (SoRelle, 2000). Therefore many people do not get required treatment since they have not accepted that they have a problem and without accepting the no solution will ever be found.
Another reason as to why people do not get treatment is that they lack an insight into the mental health conditions they are suffering from. This is common among psychotic people who are often convinced that they are okay and other people are just on their case and out to get them. This means that if one does not have an insight into their problem then they will see no need of getting any treatment.
Another reason for not seeking treatment is that people are sacred of the mental illness help. People get scared and are afraid of what will happen if they agree to go ahead and get help. They often have visions of electrocutions, over-medicated zombies as well as being forced to stay in asylums. They also do not seek treatment since they are overwhelmed by the mental health problems. People with mental health problems are worst placed mentally and they are not at the best state to make any decisions. They are often scared, lonely and they are doing anything so as to get on to the next day. Therefore adding the idea of getting help to what they are going through is terrifying to them hence they do not seek help (Conley, 2012).
