Admission To This Cooperative Program Essay

¶ … admission to this cooperative program is that I believe it will be the best way for me to develop cross-cultural communication skills and a greater understanding of the multi-culturalism that comes with globalization. Coming from the Middle East to study and work in the United States, I have come to appreciate how much of an impact cultural background and cultural norms in communication. Therefore, the exact same message may have very different connotations for different audiences, depending on their cultural backgrounds. However, working in an international arena, I have also come to appreciate the fact that human beings, no matter how seemingly diverse, have more similarities than differences. By remaining culturally sensitive and tailoring communication to be as culturally-neutral as possible, I believe that one can be a very effective communicator, regardless of the culture of the target audience. Because the co-op has a fine reputation for multi-culturalism, I believe that it will provide me with a wonderful opportunity to increase my own communication skills.

Of the available positions, I am most interested in those dealing with human resources, specifically recruitment, training, and development. I believe that my educational and professional experience will make me an asset to any of these positions. First, I am an MBA student with a constriction in organizational leadership, which has prepared me for a wide variety of positions in human resources. Perhaps more important is my work experience. I have worked as a recruitment analyst, which gave me practical experience in the HR field. In that position I was responsible for company-wide recruitment procedures, including preparations of job announcements, employment contracts, the candidate interview process, and candidate evaluation guidelines. Because I already have some practical experience directly relating to the three positions in which I am interested, I feel that I would be an excellent addition to the co-op.
