Summary and Conclusion
There is no way to protect construction workers from every accident that could possibly befall them. The nature of the work is such that complete safety is not guaranteed or even realistically possible. However, that does not mean that the number of fall accidents that occur cannot be reduced. Quite often, it is not a true accident but actual carelessness that is the cause of injuries and deaths on construction sites. Many construction workers forego safety harnesses, for example, because they can be cumbersome and inconvenient. They can make the work take longer, and make it more difficult for the worker to move around. That is especially true in cases where required work means the construction worker will have to unhook and re-hook his harness frequently. This aggravation is a small price to pay for saving lives, but the value of a harness is only seen if the use of it is enforced. On many construction projects, shortcuts are taken to avoid aggravation, higher costs, and slower creation times. This can be harmful to the workers, and can also get the construction company...
Health and Safety in Construction Industry The construction industry is by far the most dangerous one as it takes more lives every year and results in many short- and long-term minor or severe injuries. The UK government regulatory bodies have been playing a significant role in ensuring that proper health and safety procedures are followed. Throughout the last four decades, its role has been impeccable in decreasing fatalities in the construction
Selection criteria used by construction contractors for selecting a subcontractor. Criterion Weight Organization characteristics Company reputation Company age Responsiveness Personnel qualifications Related degree or certificate Relevant experience in building construction Technical abilities Financial performance Bank references Profitability history Current workload Relevant experience Similar type of projects to the proposed work Similar size ($) of projects to the proposed work Source: Dulung & Pheng, 2005, p. 94. The respective weights were then sorted in ascending order using Excel (see copy of data table at Appendix a) and are illustrated graphically
The Association of Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers (AISEE) pushed for a "national conference on safety" and as a result the Cooperative Safety Congress (CSC) was held (in 1912) and out of that meeting the National Council of Industrial Safety (NCIS) was founded. Later, the NCIS evolved into the National Safety Council (NSC) (Goetsch, p. 6). On-the-job accidents "and even fatalities" were "an accepted fact of life in the construction
Occupational Health and Safety in Catering Industry in Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health The incidence rate of workplace accidents in the catering industry in Hong Kong is higher than that of other sectors, even those associated with inherently high risk to workers. Despite corrective action within the catering industry, the accident rate remains stubbornly high. This research identifies causal factors in occupational accidents in catering companies and delineates effective strategies that
The project manager must effectively utilize all of the communication methods available to them. They must choose the most appropriate method of communication for the workers and for the managers. The more workers and managers hear the messages, in as many sensory modes possible, the more likely the message will be to make an impact on a reduction in accidents on the job. Language proved to be a problem in Australia's
It is essential for company managers, safety practitioners and manufacturing engineers to be informed of and gain sufficient knowledge about current research developments in this field and implement safety strategies as well as systems to minimize occupational health and safety risks. (Bier; Kunreuther; Phimister, 103); (Stellman, 17) Active and procedural risk management strategies are important elements in any manufacturing unit. Active risk management refers to implementing interlocks, alarms and mitigation
