Every Child Should be Wanted

Unfortunately, unwanted pregnancies are a fact of life. Young teenagers become pregnant because they don't have access to birth control; women become pregnant after being raped, and either birth control fails to work or human negligence causes birth control not to be responsibly used.

Abortion helps these women avoid having unwanted children.

For a variety of reasons, women do not want the child they are carrying. Teenagers and young women typically don't have the financial resources to support the child and are at a stage in their own life when they feel they should be fostering their own personal growth vs. looking after a child. or, some women may not be in a committed relationship where they would be assured of a father figure for the child. Victims of rape may find in morally repulsive to give birth to the child of someone who has sexually assaulted them.

Adoption is the suggested alternative to abortion. but, women shouldn't be forced to give birth to a child they do not want and may be unable to afford the cost of having a baby which can be as much as $14,000 (Greenfield, 2001). Even if the woman has medical insurance, it may pay for only a fraction of these costs. Further' there's no guarantee that there will be a family that will want the child once it is delivered. On any given day in the United States, more than 100,000 foster children are waiting to be adopted by someone who can provide a permanent, loving home (Macomber, Zielewski, Chambers and Geen (2005).
