Depression is a stifling ailment that affects millions of people each year, degrading the quality of life and the joy of living in those who suffer from this problem. More research is needed about this condition to help treat those who have problems dealing with depression and the symptoms that it brings on. Specifically, some segments of the population also need more attention and research focused on their plight and problems. A solid research project should combine these two efforts into a useful and insightful project.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the debilitating conditions of depression and African-American Men.
What specific behaviors seen in adult African-American Men can lead to depression, and does smoking cigarettes have any contribution to this problem
Research Plan
To research these issues, it is necessary to create a research plan that can help prove if there is co-relational evidence between, smoking, being black, being male and being depressed. To create such a project a qualitative investigation must be created to help develop the argument. A control group of non-smoking, black adult males should be compared to a smoking group of black adult males in search of patterns of depression. Questionnaires and medical reports can be used as data for this research.
Many theories can be used to help examine this problem through a proper paradigm such as smoking theory, social behavior theory and alternative trauma theories. The design of this research must focus around the testability of depression and how these symptoms can manifest within the test subjects. A case study done between these two groups of black males will be helpful in finding a relationship between smoking and depression.
