When a family is holidaying in a foreign country, where they do not speak the language, even a small accident can seem like an insurmountable disaster. The first problem one faces is making oneself understood to natives to find the nearest hospital, and to service providers in order to relate the events leading to the accident. If something more serious and even life-threatening, like a heart attack ensues, the problem is even greater. This is why I wish to thank, from my heart, the staff at Taipei City Hospital, and in particular the cardio-vascular surgeon, Dr. Peter Wu, for their excellent care and service not only to my father, but also to the family as a whole. Your hospital made us aware once again of the deeper meaning of family, joy and health during the holiday season, and human kindness in the face of crisis.

We were holidaying as a family in Taipei, Taiwan during the last Christmas holidays. The aim of these holidays was certainly not to go through a crisis and definitely not to have to face a potentially fatal heart attack. Our aim was simply to relax, enjoy the country, and enjoy each other's company. However, this was not to be.

On the day of my father's heart attack, there were several difficulties facing us. The biggest was the language barrier. However, once we arrived at the hospital, all our fear were laid to rest at once. As soon as the staff realized the extent of our problem, the esteemed Dr. Wu arrived to assist us. He was immediately informed that we were from abroad and could not speak the language. He took over our case and explained to us in his fluent English that my father would be taken to the Operating Room right away. With the little time he had to speak to us, he tried as best he could to calm us down. He asked a staff member to bring us something to drink while we waited for my father to come out of surgery.

In addition to the language barrier, we also had the worry that the hospital's facilities might be inadequate to handle my father's heart problem. This was however not the case, and in addition to Dr. Wu's and his staff's kind assistance, we were impressed not only with the immediate availability of facilities and technology, but also with the quality of these.

The staff were obviously well trained. Under Dr. Wu's leadership, they immediately understood our needs and tried as best to support not only my father, but also the rest of us as a family. In the great crisis we were experiencing, the hospital staff remained calm and friendly throughout. We had a comfortable waiting area and staff was available at all times to see to our needs.

When he was certain that my father was out of danger, Dr. Wu came to talk to us again, and explained that my father was now out of danger. He also helped us with the admissions procedure, medication and advice regarding rest for my father and also for us after facing such a stressful situation.

For this reason, we as a family would like to thank Dr. Peter Wu and his staff, as well as the hospital as a whole, for their excellent service and care.
