Presents that are not material in nature
A. Gifts that seek to eliminate a feeling of entitlement through teaching that entitlement is not a desirable quality to possess.
B. Presents that teach (children in particular) the importance of gratitude and contentment for what they already have.
1. Instead of giving children a material gift a lesson scan be offered instead. The lesson will attempt to teach that one is never entitled to receive anything. All presents that are given should be treated with respect.
2. Children should also be taught the importance of being thankful for what they have and that some children never receive any gifts because they are disadvantaged. With this in mind a trip to a homeless shelter to give away toys or to assist in feeding the hungry. This type of gift teaches life lessons that will last long after a material gift has deteriorated and is no longer useful.

1. A subscription to a magazine is practical because the giver can choose a magazine that the recipient is known to like and provide the magazine for the an entire year. The recipient no longer has to purchase the magazine. This is a thoughtful and inexpensive gift that is usually appreciated.
2. Everyone has friends or family members who need help learning to cook or play a musical instrument. Cooking lessons would be ideal for the young person just starting out who wants to learn to cook some simple meals. Cooking classes can also be useful for newlyweds or whole families that want to make inexpensive meals at home. The giver can make these lessons inexpensive by having a friend or family member who is a cook or plays a musical instrument give the lesson in exchange for some service that the giver could offer.
