In retrospect, I lacked the necessary motivation at the time to devote my most conscientious efforts to my academic studies, partly because I was experiencing a degree of disconnection between my studies and their practical application to the real world. I believe that my time away from a formal academic environment has helped me put many issues in their proper perspective; specifically, the importance of making the most of my good fortune and the opportunity to devote myself to completing my degree in order to pursue a meaningful career that will enable me to contribute toward the betterment of others who may be less fortunate.
